I'm posting this here for those that, like me didn't know how to go about doing rotations in Canada.
Based on the info I've gathered, as an IMG we can only do 12 weeks of rotations in Canada. I know that some people have done everything there, but I don't have the specifics as to whether that would hurt the CARMS application or not.
So, if you want to rotate in hospital/clinics affiliated to a Canadian med school go to the AFMC portal: https://www.afmcstudentportal.ca/
Just creating an account is $500 cnd. You can look at all the programs in most universities and apply. Most programs use a lottery system, so you are not guaranteed a spot, but some others (Western for example) you can apply directly to and will probably get a spot. For most programs the cost is approximately $800 Cnd, and that includes the malpractice insurance.
There are other options that are not thru the AFMC portal:
Rural Ontario Medical Program
Eastern Regional Medical Educational Program
Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network
Northern Ontario School of Medicine
Just google these and read about the application process. For most of these, if not all... you need to apply at least 6 months ahead of time.
My experience: I'm doing Internal Med at Western and I love it! You get a lot of exposure and a ton of responsibility which is what is expected of a 4th year Canadian Med student. There is a lot of teaching on the part of residents and attendings and overall is a great preparation for PGY1.
I hope this helps and good luck to all of you! Email me if you have any questions firstname.lastname@example.org
